A break in music is still music: a span of time in which to act. It’s the basis for breakdowns, break­ beats, and break dancing. On paper a break seems like next to nothing, but in practice it can be the moment when everything comes to life. This trio has worked together for eleven years, and we’ve gathered the material on this album over the last three. As American musicians, we tend to make music out of breaks: building inside them, moving through them, looping them, embellishing, flexing and warping them. The expansive, ritualistic pos si­ bilities of the break are central to African diasporic music, which informs everything we do.
