From the time I bought the seminal Gospel recording, Amazing Grace by Aretha Franklin, I have been smitten with the spirit and the drive of gospel music. I remain inspired by the singers (Aretha has been one of my favorite musicians since I can remember!) in addition to the accompanying musicians, especially the pianists. What He Said was very
much inspired by gospel music. In writing it, I hoped to capture some of the exuberance, soulfulness, spontaneity and interplay I hear in that music.
