Peter Kember's musical life in Spaceman 3, Spectrum and E.A.R. (as well as his production work with MGMT, Panda Bear and Beach House), has always been about two things: influences and sound. Kember is still under the thrall of the Velvets, who colored his lines of Spaceman 3, but the vocal inspiration on All Things Being Equal—the first solo album released under his nom de musique in thirty years—is mined, he says, from Sam Cooke and the Everly Brothers.
Recorded in 2015, these electronic odysseys are "regenerative stories told back and forward," focused on "memory, space, consumerism, consciousness—everything." This is consummate, layered, carefully built synth rock, much of it at ballad-like tempos, permeated by deep-toned, at times talky vocals that ponder the zen of ethical living and a newfound sense of ecological alarm. Here in a chugging, almost soothing electronic jam, "Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper)," he chants "Take me somewhere (A little bit deeper)/I don't mind if (The climb is steeper)."
The sound of All Things Being Equal—cluttered, dynamically driven, and very Eno-esque in spots—is grounded in the extensive use of such historic analog synth landmarks as the Buchla Music Easel, Modem Dubreq Stylophone S2 and his longtime favorite, the EMS Synthi AKS (once used on Dark Side of the Moon). All this old school firepower makes the album's most amiable groove, "The Way That You Live," with a chorus of "Make it about the way that you live, make it about the love that you give," a happy, memory-generating jolt for those Spaceman 3 fans still longing for the reunion that will never happen.
