Matt Haimovitz, Christopher O'Riley,2014- BEETHOVEN: Cello Sonatas & Variations ("贝大奏"全集/PTC/2015) [FLAC/24/96]
Having shared ideas and projects for some time, there was no doubt for PENTATONE to join forces with OXINGALE RECORDS. This is a union of two innovative and devoted recording companies with a long history of producing reputable records and collaborating with esteemed artists. We are pleased to have you join us in celebrating this milestone as it gives way to a tremendously intriguing and inquisitive series of co-productions for you, our customers and ourselves.
The first title in the PENTATONE OXINGALE Series is BEETHOVEN, Period. This release features the complete sonatas and variations for fortepiano and violoncello, recorded on period instruments. In this collaboration, Matt Haimovitz plays his own Goffriller cello, crafted in Venice, Italy in 1710 -—outfitted with ox-gut strings also from Italy and an early 19th century rosewood tailpiece and drawn by a Dominique Peccatte bow of the same era, while Christopher O’Riley plays on an original Broadwood fortepiano made in 1823.
Delivered in PENTATONE’s signature warm, dynamic and detailed sound, this recording gives an opportunity for a straight encounter with the power of the rich interaction between the two instruments. Both Haimovitz and O’Riley engage themselves with the music, playing with welcome harmony and delightful phrasing from beginning to end, producing a dramatic and lyrical effect. Be prepared to be mesmerised by every single one of their electrifying phrases.
"Haimovitz and O'Riley impress in both the lyrical moments and those in which completely committed drive is required."
--Gramophone Editor's Choice, April 2015
"Matt Haimovitz is almost as good a writer as he is a cellist, and his intelligent notes to this recording make for fine, informative reading...In fact, this performance is more nuanced than some, with larger dynamic contrasts than many players allow themselves...Given that their playing is captured in beautifully true, beautifully balanced surround sound from PENTATONE, that's all the more reason to return to this excellent pair of discs."
--Lee Passarella, Audiophile Audition, June 2015
"These gritty, lively performances have special relevance to Buffalo, and here's why: On Dec. 1 and 3, Matt Haimovitz and Christopher O'Riley are appearing here courtesy of the Buffalo Chamber Music Society...So many period instrument performances are fussy and overengineered. But these two musicians have a natural sound that jumps out at you and draws you in...Haimovitz and O'Riley have been performing this music at a wide variety of venues, from the Tractor Tavern in Seattle to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. I'm glad Buffalo is on the list. This will be fun." --Mary Kunz Goldman, Buffalo News, June 2015
