简介:
James Ehnes,MAO,2015- MOZART: The Complete Violin Concertos (莫扎特小提琴协奏曲全集/2017) [FLAC/24/44.1]
James Ehnes is recognised the world over as one of the great violinists of our time famed for his brilliant technique and musical intelligence as both soloist and chamber musician. These recordings of the complete Mozart Violin Concertos made over ten years ago for CBC and long out of the catalogue sound as fresh as the day they were made. James directs a hand-picked orchestra of colleagues who are as meticulous and fine musicians as he is. The cadenzas in all the concertos are by Ehnes who studied the composer s own cadenzas of the contemporaneous piano concertos especially Nos 8 & 9 K246 and 271. 'Vital, elegant, beautiful playing of all five concertos...rapt eloquence' Gramophone
Review
As Isabelle Faust did in her Harmonia Mundi Mozart survey, the Canadian violinist excludes the composer s greatest work, the Sinfonia Concertante, K364. Yet this reissue is worth acquiring for its mainstream Mozartian values: modern instruments, sensible tempi, gracious phrasing and virtuoso brilliance, especially in the Turkish music of No 5 s finale. Ehnes s own cadenzas sound anachronistic, but this is a good modern replacement for the classic Arthur Grumiaux set on Decca. --Hugh Canning The Sunday Times, 29th January 2017
Collectors should be aware this is not a new recording from James Ehnes. This is a reissue of his complete set of Mozart violin concertos recorded for CBC Records in 2006. It is a wondrous set and it is nice to see it circulating again, curiously on the Onyx label this time around. They've even retained the original cover photography.
Stylish, alert and immaculate playing from Ehnes, as expected, and equally articulate and full-bodied support from the Mozart Anniversary Orchestra. Compared to my newest favorite complete set (Kristof Barati on Brilliant Classics) and the set-in-progress (#3, 4 & 5 by Henning Kraggerud on Naxos), Ehnes and company are more traditionally Romantic, with Ehnes's characteristically gorgeous, sweet tone on full display. The recording is beautiful - warm, full and richly reverberant, compared to the more crisply articulate and detailed recordings on Brilliant and Naxos.
This set is just as rewarding as Barati's, but in different ways. Ehnes adopts generally slower tempos than Barati, but they never drag and are never less than what I would call alert. Also he plays his own, original cadenzas to great advantage. His sweet, gorgeous tone and warm, lovely recording acoustic bring much satisfaction. All in all, this set is highly recommended if you don't already own the original CBC release and are open to a warmer, less "authentically informed" approach than what seems to be the norm today.
