Julien Brocal,pianist - - Reflections: MOMPOU & RAVEL (2018) [FLAC/24/96]
If only mirrors would reflect a little before sending images back’, Jean Cocteau once quipped, playing with the different meanings of a word which can relate to thought, light and sound. In each sense of the term, we understand a similar kind of movement: a ricochet.
Yet only poets truly have the power to go through the looking-glass to investigate the mysteries beneath the surface. Maurice Ravel and Federico Mompou are the kind of composers to make lightning flash or waters stream from a simple sharpened note, ghosts chatter or spirits gather at the tolling of a flat. (Incidentally, Mompou’s maternal grandparents were bell-founders, a fact by which nobody listening to his ‘Pour appeler la joie’ would be surprised.)
Samson François had a pithy definition of Ravel the composer: ‘A dead man looking at life’. Mompou, meanwhile, seems more like a young man listening to the sounds of a quiet cemetery and gently sinking into eternal silence. Their origins criss-cross from one side of the border to the other: Mompou (the Spaniard)’s mother was from Tarbes, in the French Pyrenees; Ravel (the Frenchman)’s, from the Spanish part of the Basque country.
