Russia, France, Bohemia, and the New World – what a fantastic journey! Under the renowned conductor Milan Turkovic the twelve soloists of the Selmer Saxharmonic are now for the first time presenting the symphonic dimension of the fascinating saxophone family.
Invented by Adolphe Sax in the mid-nineteenth century to fill the sound gap between the woodwinds and brass instruments, the saxophone went on to develop along two paths. Jazz and pop music would hardly be imaginable without the smoky and robustly melancholy sound of the saxophone, and in recent years in particular a vibrant classical scene has arisen, with young musicians now receiving solid college training on the saxophone. The sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and heavy weight bass saxophones range over a wide sound palette with immense dynamic possibilities, but what is even more surprising is the virtuosity – highly expressive and never resting for a moment – teased out of these instruments here.
All the arrangements, including Dvorák's “SlavonicDances,” Milhaud's “Scaramouche,” and Shostakovich's “Jazz Suite,” seem to have been composed just for these saxophonists. Moreover, they successfully venture into Gershwin's jazz world, and Jean Matitia's “Devil's Rag” forms a special high point: here the highest virtuosity, suppleness of intonation, and articulations of avant-garde flair make the listening experience true pleasure.
