90年代初，the sundays以一种独立摇滚姿态出现在英格兰本土和美国，
乐队的风格建立在the smiths乐队式的吉他流行乐和cocteau twins类
似迷幻舞曲的梦幻流行乐基础上。尽管乐队的前两张专辑销量很好，但是
却不像许多评论家预测的，认为他们会进入主流市场，实际上乐队并未逾
越而进入主流队伍。

1987年的夏天，the sundays成立于伦敦。最初，乐队包括主音harriet
wheeler和吉他手david gavurin。之前，harreit wheeler曾经在一个
叫jim jiminee的乐队里当过歌手。在乐队完成了几首歌后，贝斯手paul b
rindley和鼓手patrick hannan加入。1988年8月，乐队在伦敦camden
的falcoln“vertigo club”（某个俱乐部）举办了他们的首场表演。这场首
演赢得了圈内的很好的口碑，并且乐队也成为诸多唱片公司争抢的目标。在
这年底，乐队终于和rough trade签约，并且在一年内，他们还将和dgc唱
片公司签一个合约，以负责他们在美国方面的市场。



“can't be sure”是the sundays的首支单曲，在1989一月一经推出，就打入英国榜45名。乐队花了一年时间灌录他们的首张专辑《reading,writing
arithmetic》,这张专辑在1990年初推出后，受到了评论界的关注，并且出人
意料地打入英国榜，取得第4名的好成绩。稍晚在美国上市后，这张专辑也打入
现代摇滚榜，获得了39名的成绩。这张专辑在美国的成功，很大程度来源于电台
和mtv频道对单曲“here's where the story ends”的热播，这首单曲更是
荣登现代摇滚榜冠军单曲宝座。1990年的其他大多数时间，乐队在美国，欧洲
和日本进行了成功的巡演。





1991年间，rough trade由于财政上的失策倒闭了。在该厂牌停止运作后，the
sundays和英国另外的一个唱片公司parlophone签约，之后，《reading writin
g,arithmetic》在英国一直停版直到1996年才再次出版。尽管考虑到rough trade
公司内裂带来的阻碍，乐队还是花了很长时间完成他们的第二张专辑。在1992年秋天
乐队发行了既《reading,writing,arithmetic》后的第二张专辑，对于这张《blind》
评论预测各不相同，但是专辑很快在美国和英国打榜。在美国，“love”在现代摇滚
榜进入第2名，“goodbye”进入到了第11名。尽管《blind》最初看来是成功的，
但是它不如首张专辑那么持久，到1993年夏季时，已经很快就从榜上滑落了。此间，
乐队作了配合专辑宣传的巡演。 在《blind》发片后，the sundays沉寂了好几年

只有1994年，美国电视直销上使用了他们翻唱滚石乐队的曲目“Wild Horses”。
the sundays再次发行专辑时，那已经是5年后的事了。wheeler和gavurin结婚了
生了个女儿叫billie，在此期间过着普通人的生活。这些足以解释他们暂别歌坛的原因
但是等待是值得的，the sundays凭借第三张专辑《static&silence》再次获得了大
众的认同和成功，并诞生了流行单曲“summertime”。
