Fiona Apple成长于曼哈顿，来自于一个艺术家庭，父亲是一个演员，母亲是歌手、舞蹈家、厨师和家庭妇女。父母离婚后，Apple姐妹俩和母亲一道住在纽约一座公寓里。Apple 8岁时从音乐中找到了安慰并开始学弹钢琴。在1994年高中毕业后，Apple看望了她在洛杉矶的父亲，在那她录了一盘Demo带，然后大量拷贝寄给别人。之后她回到纽约过圣诞，Apple捎了一盘带给一位老同学，这位同学在一位唱片公司老板家做保姆。接下去的事情很简单：这位老板（Kathryn Schenker）听到了Demo带，并在圣诞晚会上播给了著名制作人Andrew Slater（Don Henley，Jackson Browne和The Wallflowers的监制)听，“Andy打电话给我说要和我谈谈，那以后我们就开始了合作，一直到现在”，Apple说。Apple最后签下了Sony的合约。

1998年苹果姐凭借第一张专辑Tidal 获得格莱美最佳新人提名，并凭借单曲Criminal 获得格莱美最佳摇滚女歌手奖，此后的三张专辑均获得了格莱美最佳另类专辑或格莱美最佳流行专辑的提名。苹果姐共获得8次格莱美提名，得到一座格莱美奖杯。
