Claes: I was reading your online journal (at https://www.jasonmraz.com) and you wrote a pretty long entry on August 10, 2005 from Hawaii. So?have you found proper feng shui for your laptop computer now?
Mraz: I do. I found the desktop image I was looking for. I deleted a couple of things that were just kind of hanging out on there and didn't need to be there. I opened up appropriate files for those things to go into. I'm really an "everything in its right place" kind of guy. I move my silverware until it's symmetrical. Things are arranged in a way on my placemat so they are parallel or perpendicular to the table.
Claes: A little obsessive-compulsive?
Mraz: A little bit.
Claes: Also in your journal, you mention you prefer watching movies being made that watching the final product.
Mraz: I'm just fascinated to see what goes into setting up a shot. Same as making records. I'm fascinated with exactly how many, or where the microphones are placed?all the wires and all that stuff.
I don't know why that is. Maybe it's because it's all about the creative process. Because when it's done?it's done. You get to watch it again and again, but the creative process is in the making.
Claes: The creative process you went through making Mr. A-Z took one year. How do you feel the end product came out?
Mraz: I think the end product is great, personally. I think it definitely sounds like a year inside of it. When I say a year, that takes it from the writing process all the way to mastering. But, I can hear all of the seasons in the album. I've got my birthday in there. I can hear the holidays. That's just me, you know? I don't know what any others think. To me it's my scrapbook. All those words and sounds in there.
Claes: It does feel like a personal scrapbook, but other people's scrapbooks are fun to look through.
Mraz: True. I've yet to get to a point in my life where I can write a song or an album based on a fictional plot. I've tried often even to take my own experiences and make them somewhat vague so that people aren't just listening to Jason Mraz situations. That's difficult, because I write about my experiences.
One of the big reasons I do that, I think, is because I write for myself, my friends, and my fans first. These are the people I'm playing with and playing for and they are the ones who are listening to the tunes. I've got a small group of friends that I play with and travel with. Sometimes I don't really get out of that circle. Those songs are for those people. It just so happens that we put them out in stores.
