The album was going to be called Matahdatah, with its original concept of audiovisual series filmed around the world and its first single called "Swords" released in July 2015. In 2016, M.I.A. confirmed that the album is now called A.I.M. (which she also considered as the name for her previous LP, Matangi). In May 2016 on Periscope, the singer previewed the complete album, consisting of twelve tracks. M.I.A. said it would be her last album. She considers it her most positive album, saying that there's no complains on it.
