The 14th studio album for Carey, is a timeless record that [surprisingly] delivers in some really big ways. Like “Cry.”, a robust ballad, produced by James “Big Jim” Wright, is both airy and angelic. Simmering vocals, soaring ad-libs, and a harmonic piano light up the track, as Carey softly whispers “’til we both break down, and cry” aching with emotional intensity. “It wasn’t about me crying.” says Carey, “It was about, I need us to have this moment together to mutually just have an emotional release.”
The 14-track LP, cements a clear understanding of Carey’s vision to restore[real] talent back into the music business. This point is apparent on “Dedicated,” the Nas-assisted, delectably nostalgic track, borrows from Wu-Tang Clan’s “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’. A respectable verse from former collaborator, Nas, helps this vision, as he raps “Nah, we don’t wish today’s game was old again. We just wish it wasn’t full of Draconian, Babylonian, phony men.” Lead single “#Beautiful,” combines Carey’s massive vocals in all their stripped down R&B glory, with Miguel’s eccentrically rock-infused sound, making for a remarkable old-school, glossy pop jam. “Make It Look Good,” a funky 80’s skipping beat driven record, complete with a soulful harmonica intro is delightful and reminiscent of the coveted Motown era.
