伯特·巴卡拉克生于密苏里州堪萨斯城。曾在多伦多麦吉尔学院读书，后在加利福尼亚州坦戈勒伍德向达鲁斯·米豪德学习音乐。五十年代成为职业的钢琴伴奏家，曾经给维克·达蒙恩、波利·伯根和乔尔·格雷等艺人担任伴奏。他还和德藉明星玛琳·黛德丽一起作周游世界的演出，任表演组织者和指挥。
五十年代后半期开始写流行歌曲，并为电影创作歌曲。1969年为著名影片《神枪手与智多星》谱的乐曲和为这部影片谱写的歌曲《雨点不断地落在我的头上》（Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head）同时获得两项奥斯卡金像奖。由于谱写《神枪手与智多星》的配曲，英国电影学院也于1970年授予他安东尼·阿斯奎奖。伯特·巴卡拉克的电影歌曲都由哈尔·戴维作词，他们两人合作的《风流绅士》（1965）、《阿尔菲》（1966）两部影片的主题歌和《皇家赌场》（1967）一片的插曲《寻找爱情》，都获得该年奥斯卡最佳电影歌曲金像奖。伯特·巴卡拉克音乐作品的特点是采用切分音、弱拍节奏，他灌制的歌曲唱片也获得巨大的成功。伯特·巴卡拉克参与创作了一大批歌曲，其中包括卡朋特乐队于1970年的成名冠军金唱片《Close To You》。
