Surprised. A little bit out of control of my thoughts! What a strange...and wonderful first experience, as I slipped this CD into my car stereo driving around town the other day. The music called to my heart, though my mind tried to engage something else, and that, it turns out, is precisely the name of the album. "There are only two things that pierce the human heart: beauty and affliction." (Simone Weil) The beauty utterly pierced my heart.
Now that I have listened to the entire collection many times, I personally think his second composition, "Bozeman Waltz" is worth the price of the CD. It takes me to scenes of my two boys playing when they were young children, smiling, laughing, in simplicity in simpler times...great joy, in them and in me. Scenes playing like a movie in my mind, except the tears in my eyes belie it is in my mind. It is in my heart. Similar but different scenes play with the other selections. It is, quite simply, one of the most unique and beautiful listening experiences I have had in years.
I have had two friends independently tell me the music sounds like Yanni. I hope Jim is not offended by that. It was not my original thought, but as I imagine his beautiful music enveloped with a full orchestral sound, it fits. I get a few goose bumps. And I wonder, and hope fervently, that somehow, someway, that might come to pass; but only for new work. Don't touch my Bozeman Waltz.(By John M Moorhead)
