Ai Phoenix于1997年成立于挪威的卑尔根（西南部海港城市），Mona M鴕k的安静的旋律和喘息似的声音一直是乐队的领导特色。这个专注于“舒适的音景营造和表达苦乐参半的古典韵味的多愁善感”的五人组合分别是Patrick Lundberg、Bosse Litzheim、Espen Mellingen和Robert J鴑num。1998年，他们成立了自己的厂牌－Ai Phoenix，并在当年年末发表了两张作品：The Violence/Mature 小样CD和他们的第一张full-length作品《Film》。1999年，乐队在发表了另一张名为《Extract》小样CD后，专辑《Film》又被挪威的Indie厂牌DBUT重新发行，这使得该乐队得以扩大自己的影响，这种影响在乐队于2000年发表了《The Drive Is Dead》专辑后愈发强烈，乐队这时已签约到Racing Junior厂牌下。在Racing Junior下的第一张发行作品《the Happy to Get Her 10"》以及2000年的《The Drive Is Dead》后，Ai Phoenix建立起了颇具国际性的地下听众群，2001年，他们与St.Thomas合作在Racing Junior下发表了单曲作品“This Is Close”，此后该单曲在他们的家乡挪威被题名为当年最佳单曲
