Putumayo, quite possibly the world's most accessible and well-distributed world music label, has hatched a series known as Putumayo Kids with the intention of providing young and very young people with ready access to high-quality music played by traditional and contemporary artists from all over the world. Hawaiian Playground focuses almost entirely upon young, contemporary, largely indigenous Hawaiian performers who accurately represent important elements in late-20th and early-21st century popular Hawaiian music. Learn these names: Raiatea, Robi Kahakalau, Justin Kawika Young, Teresa Bright, Willie K., Keali'i Reichel, Ehukai, and Imua. Hawaiian Playground contains only two examples of adoptive or emulative Hawaiian-flavored entertainment: Texas-based children's music hero Joe McDermott taps into the old Tin Pan Alley Hawaiian novelty aesthetic with "Come to Hawaii," a quaint performance overlaid with 78-rpm surface noise, while the goofiest offering, performed by the Moonlighters, is a Dan Hicks/Squirrel Nut Zippers-styled send-up of the phrase "Right On."
