2002年音乐会的指挥，是东方观众非常熟悉的日本知名指挥家小泽征尔。他也是继祖宾．梅塔之后，史上第二位指挥维也纳新年音乐会的亚洲人士,对东方人来说是一大骄傲。
小泽征尔所挑选的演出曲目基本上仍是以史特劳斯家族作品为主，由于他那高雅精准的手法，甚至偶尔幽默俏皮的神来之笔，完美传递了史特劳斯轻松活泼的旋律，在他的指挥妙手下，这场演出被誉为「近年来最富维也纳气质的音乐盛事」。
