作为芬兰最卓越的作曲家，西贝柳斯所创作的每首作品，都可以称得上是反映了森林与湖泊之国--芬兰的风土人情的北欧音乐的杰出代表。
伯恩斯坦认为西贝柳斯足以与马勒并称为20世纪最重要的作曲家。这其中也深受其老师谢尔盖•库塞维茨基的影响。库塞维茨基在20世纪初期是著名的西贝柳斯作品的演奏家。自然，作为库塞维茨基的徒弟，伯恩斯坦也因而有许多接触西贝柳斯的机会，在他成为纽约爱乐乐团音乐总监之后，也屡次将西贝柳斯的曲目收入到音乐会中。
