《睡美人》是俄罗斯作曲家柴可夫斯基将戏剧性标题交响乐的写作手法运用到舞剧音乐创作中去的卓越成果，被誉为芭蕾音乐宝库中的珍品。1829年4月，巴黎歌剧院曾上演过一部《睡美人》。1889年“睡美人”在俄国芭蕾舞台上又苏醒过来，唤醒睡美人的是马里乌斯·彼季帕。1890年1月15日，《睡美人》在马林斯基剧院首场公演，沙皇和一批显贵出席观看，休息时沙皇还接见了舞剧的作者。从此，“睡美人”一跃为俄国芭蕾的一部经典著作，再也没有离开过世界芭蕾舞坛。
