Founded in 2009 after Mollestad was awarded “the young jazz talent of the year” by Molde jazzfest, the trio was signed by Rune Grammofon in the following year. The Hedvig Mollestad Trio (also referred to as HM3) is made up of Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen on guitar, Ellen Brekken on double bass, and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad on drums.
Jazz or metal? Stonerswing? Or doomjazz maybe? For every new record by Hedvig Mollestad Trio critics try to invent an adequate genre name for their spellbinding, uncompromising and visceral music. The UK music magazine Classic Rock came closest: Jazz Sabbath. The band’s eclectic mix of influences ranges from Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix to John Coltrane and contemporary jazz and metal music. This has proved to be a recipe for success: Hedvig Mollestad Trio has a steady growing international fan base.
