Hamlet - Fantasy Overture, Op.67
This version of "Manfred" in charge of the incredible Philharmonic one of Vienna to the orders of Maazel is the whole classic one of the DECCA. All the sections of the band are excellent and Maazel can translate the tragedy and the passion of the score of an outstanding way, only overcome perhaps by Markevitch in his legendary recording with the Symphonic one of London. The disc includes an electrifying version of the infrequent Overture "Hamlet", of a panache and virtuosity as no other version (the frantic descending scales of the trombonists soin of hearing and not believing). The sound in "Manfred" (1965) is quite good and it does honor to the band, to the director and to the record stamp, still in spite of a certain distortion in the thunderous passages that precede the coda of the last movement. "Hamlet" (1972) is, obviously, top in this aspect.
