Mendelssohn's two piano concertos always have fared well on disc, but rarely to the inspired heights this release attains. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is on tip-top form and loaded to go. He brilliantly negotiates Mendelssohn's scintillating keyboard writing, fusing the best qualities of significant earlier recordings (Rudolf Serkin's nervous drive, Murray Perahia's lyrical poise, and András Schiff's linear orientation) into his own virtuosic voice. His ricocheting chords and octaves (as in the D minor concerto's finale, or in the G minor's opening movement) are excitingly supple and specifically voiced to the proverbial quick.
Herbert Blomstedt not only zeros in on his soloist's every inflection, but also elicits his Leipzig musicians to play as if their lives depended on it. The rapid tuttis are never slick, but instead are characterful and alive. Notice the strings' robust patina in the G minor's slow movement and the sharp timbral contrasts that color the brass antiphony introducing the same concerto's finale. In the Variations Sérieuses, Thibaudet may not match Perahia's cultivated legato in the work's more lyrical episodes, yet his interpretation is no less polished and well considered. On the other hand, Thibaudet wields a lighter, more playful right hand in the Rondo Capriccioso's main section and projects the eloquent Andante intro to stronger effect. In short, a release that does all of its participants proud (including the recording team, of course). Bravo, Jean-Yves!
