It is now a full quarter of a century since the violinist Viktoria Mullova won first prize at the Sibelius Competition. Difficult to reconcile the remote though regal soloist of the Eighties, her style forged in the image of her great teacher Leonid Kogan, with the slim tone and lightning bow we hear from her nowadays. Mullova plays Vivaldi (the concertos RV187 208, 234, 277 & 580, Onyx ONYX 4001 ) finds the agile stylist that Mullova has become spiriting her way through five diverse concertos supported by the snappy baroque group Il Giardino Armonico. Mullova plays a period-tuned Strad strung with gut, her lean sound just occasionally hinting at her lofty younger self. Try the impetuous tarantella that opens the Concerto in C "L'Inquiétudine", or her trimly tailored account of "Il Favorito". Great that the Onyx label was able to launch on the back of such an excellent and absorbing programme.
