“I feel air from another planet”, the first line of the George poem Entrückung(Rapture)
which Schoenberg sets in the final movement, has often been quoted as a stunningly
accurate symbol of the composer’s move into the unfamiliar territory of atonality.
Although the work ends in pure F sharp major, from its wonderfully eerie beginning this
finale inhabits a strangely beautiful and rarefied world. The premiere on 21 st December 1908
caused uproar, with hisses, laughter and shouting and the soprano in tears at the end.
