简介: New on Morr Music sister label Sound Of A Handshake, Theater Island is the solo debut from Sóley Stefánsdóttir, a 23-year-old student of composition who also happens to be a member of Icelandic band, Seabear. Stefánsdóttir specialises in a kind of spooky indie-folk style that preserves a tuneful disposition whilst steering well clear of any notions of kitschness. Instead, the likes of 'Kill The Clown' and opener 'Dutla' have more than a hint of the macabre about them, plodding through disheveled and witchy acoustic guitars and pleasurably gloomy piano parts. Taking a more upbeat sound, the rustic rattle of 'Theater Island' rounds off this EP's impressive opening half, leading into a second phase that includes the CocoRosie-esque 'We Will Put Her In Two Graves', the heartfelt, almost Joanna Newsom-like ballad 'Blue Leaves' and the highly memorable minor-key ache of 'Read Your Book'. A very strong first outing, Theater Island proves that principal songwriter Sindri Mar Sigfusson isn't the only member of Seabear with considerable talent.
