HiRes音乐简介:
Paul Bley is a Canadian jazz musician.
I think it took some guts on Sony'spart to issue this session as an SACD. Certainly, Paul Bley is no stranger tojazz fans, but he is more closely associated with the avant garde than with the mainstream, and this title is among his more abstract dates.
Many fans of Bley maintain that heis best heard solo, and this 1999 recording comes pretty close -- Bley's free improvisations are accompanied sparingly by the intelligent percussion of Togashi.
The production here almost reminds me of an ECM date. Of course, the fact that this is a pure DSD recording makes this sound FAR better than any ECM CD I've heard. The piano tone is remarkably natural, and the percussion comes through with startling clarity.
The packaging of this SACD has"audiophile" written all over it. The inside cover lists all of the equipment used in the production chain, and the booklet not only provides photographs of recording setup, but also contains a diagram showing exactly where the mikes were places relative to the instruments. Well done, Sony!
By the way, if you're a fan of more traditional jazz, but have been curious about jazz's more avant garde forms, this SACD would be a good bet. This is not the frenetic "headache music" that so many people expect from experimental or free jazz. While thoroughly modern, Paul Bley tends to favor slow tempos and simple yet ambiguous lines, and he is a master of the use of silence.
