提到民谣摇滚艺人——尼尔·杨（Neil Young）这个名字恐怕是无人不晓。毋庸置疑，发誓要将自己的一生都献给摇滚乐的加拿大民谣老将Neil Young是摇滚乐诞生以来最有影响力的艺术家之一，也是近年来为数不多的仍保持着旺盛创作精力的老牌艺人之一。
1945年11月，Neil Young出生于加拿大多伦多，父亲是加拿大著名的体育记者Scott Young。在双亲离异之后，Neil Young跟随母亲来到了Winnipeg。正如那个时代的很多年轻人一样，Neil Young从小就自学吉他，并在高中时开始组乐队。在有过不少组乐队的经验之后，Young真正的音乐生涯开始于在加州组建的Buffalo Springfield乐队。1966年秋，Neil Young和Stephen Stills在内的另外三位乐队成员开始录制乐队首张专辑《Buffalo Springfield》。Buffalo Springfield乐队在短暂的两年内共发行了三张专辑，Neil Young的创作天分得以充分发挥，在队期间创作出《Mr. Soul》 ，《Broken Arrow》，《Expecting to Fly》和《I Am a Child》等著名歌曲。在短暂的一进一出之后，Neil Young在1968年5月正式离开了Buffalo Springfield乐队，开始了个人的单飞生涯，同年宣告了乐队的解散。
1969年1月，Neil Young和加拿大老乡Joni Mitchell的经纪人Elliot Roberts合作在Reprise公司发行了首张个人专辑《Neil Young》，专辑由Jack Nitzsche参与共同制作。同年，Young结识了the Rockets乐队并开始经常合作。之后Young将the Rockets改名为Crazy Horse，并将其作为第二张个人专辑《Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere》的伴奏乐队。Young的著名歌曲《Cinnamon Girl》和《Down by the River》都出自该专辑。在个人发行过两张专辑之后，Neil Young又加入到Crosby, Stills和Nash中，于1970年3月跟该组合合作发行了专辑《Deja Vu》。这个时期是Young的一个创作高峰。在1970年年底和1972年，Young又分别发行了专辑《After the Gold Rush》和《Harvest》，这两张专辑成为Neil Young最畅销的专辑，同时也奠定了Neil Young在摇滚届的地位。《Harvest》中的歌曲《Heart of Gold》还成为Neil Young唯一一首冠军单曲。

