In the summer of 2013, ‘The Ghost’ (Frans van Geest), ‘The King’ (Vincent King) & ‘I’ (founder Rob van Bavel) approached the Metropole Orkest with plans for these recordings. The idea? Original jazz based on classical compositions, played by the trio (piano, contrabass, guitar) supplemented with the strings of the Metropole Orchestra under the direction of conductor Rob Horsting. The choice for Metropole Orkest Strings was obvious, the musicians are mostly classically trained but have the special timing necessary to play jazz. The result? An album with 9 compositions by Rob van Bavel, which is now also performed live twice. This amalgamation of jazz & orchestral music can perhaps best be described as ‘chamber jazz’ for people with a very large living room. One where 30 musicians fit in with their instruments. ‘The Inventors’ is beautiful instrumental music. Classical melodies interspersed with virtuoso jazz solos, groovy rhythms & adventurous transitions from ballad to up tempo.
