Her style reminds me of a lot of older dream-pop and lo-fi artists who rely on a lot of layered instrumentals, slow tempos, and atmosphere to present themselves. Airy does this just as well with “Last Night” serving as a brooding introduction.
The almost five minute song has a minimalist feel even with the guitars, bass, and drums providing a cage around Airy’s vocals. Her vocals are run through effects to give it an almost mechanical tone. You’d expect to walk into an almost pitch black club and hear this track in the background. The song doesn’t even rely on a long bridge, but lets the song wander and reach a slight crescendo.
“Disappearing Ways” is more of a cross between rock and psychedelic music. It still relies on the slower tempo, but adds more vocal melodies, still run through effects, while allowing more rhythms through the bass. The guitar picks through the path and sometimes is behind the rhythm section. It does make its presence known at different points in the song. As one of the longest songs, it is given more room to breathe and explore.
Airy’s description on Bandcamp is folk, freakfolk, dream pop, and indie. This is a pretty accurate description. “Old Mailbox” also brings in some psychedelic tones like on “Disappearing Ways,” but also some jazz influence. A shoegaze element also makes its presence known.
It’s funny because I didn’t really think about the folk influence in the music, but “Eden” reminds me a little bit of Kim Sawol in the verses. While not following the same folk mechanics, there are some audio cues that came up.
Seeds is Airy’s first official release and through the five songs, it’s already dense and complex . There are a lot of different directions Airy could go, whether deeper into dream pop or exploring more of the freakfolk style as is described. I don’t think Seeds was something composed on accident, but a very deliberate exploration of music. The next release will likely surprise everyone.
