Calypso 作为一种歌曲形式，于十八世纪末起源于拉丁美洲西印度群岛的特立尼达。其歌词多为即兴、叙事、嘲讽时事。旋律多反复，采用切分节奏。在格式上通常8行诗节之后有4行叠句。伴奏乐器常用弦乐器及原始打击乐器。
JOHN DENVER　在生前访谈中曾提到“克利普索号”是艘著名的航海油轮。他以此歌向著名航海学家致敬
