It’s not exactly complete—since it doesn’t include Mardi Gras, the group’s final album recorded as a trio—but The Complete Collection does feature just about every Creedence song one could want, along with live versions and alternate takes that flesh out the band’s catalog. John Fogerty was a peerless songwriter, able to say it all in three minutes or less. His string of hit singles let Creedence play on both AM and FM radio at a time when the distinction was an important one between pop groups and “serious” rock bands. Rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t get much better than “Green River,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Down on the Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” or “Run Through the Jungle.” The band was often characterized as “swamp rock” and sung of being “Born on the Bayou,” despite originating in the Bay Area. It was also a band with worthwhile deep cuts, as the greatness of “Wrote a Song for Everyone,” “Ramble Tamble,” and the 11-minute cover of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” illustrate. The amount of hit singles here is staggering, and the quality is even more so.
