古巴是位於中美洲的小島國，與美國為鄰，距離佛羅里達州的南端僅115公里，人口只有大約1000萬，可是產生了舉世聞名的拉丁舞蹈音樂：Cha Cha Cha(查查，或譯作恰恰)、Mambo(曼波)、Rumba(倫巴)和近年瘋魔世界的Salsa。
古巴一向並不富裕，由是物價很低廉，其地理位置(接近美國、有怡人的加勒比海風光)和前西班牙殖民地的異國風情，使它成為40-50年代美國人的度假消遣勝地，好像香港人到深圳、或新加坡人到對岸馬來西亞的柔佛大肆消費一樣。古巴的首都哈瓦那當時更是旺中之旺，夜總會、酒吧、妓院林立，活脫脫是一個五彩繽紛的銷金窩、不夜城。
古巴人口有六成是白人，大多是西班牙殖民的後裔；有兩成是黑人，很多是從非洲古巴被販賣過來做奴隸的後代；其餘的兩成是黑白混血。西班牙熱情洋溢的音樂，是西方音樂的大宗，黑奴帶來了歐洲人想也想不到的非洲複雜節拍，兩者混合形成的古巴音樂，成為20世紀音樂界的一朵奇葩。古巴出現大量的傑出音樂家和作品，在拉丁音樂」中和巴西的Samba(森巴)和阿根廷的Tango(探戈) 鼎足而三。這三個國家之中，古巴最小，但古巴音樂的成就最大。
