《浮士德的天谴》为柏辽兹（1803年12月11日—1869年3月8日）所作，他认为《浮士德的天谴》是他最认真经营、最珍视的一部作品，它综合了柏辽兹交响曲与歌剧创作经验，是柏辽兹成熟时期充满浪漫风格的集大成之作！这部为管弦乐与人声(包含合唱团)编写的作品，他称这种作品型式为"légende dramatique"（戏剧化传说）。剧本由柏辽兹与刚朵尼尔(Almire Gandonnière)依据歌德的作品浮士德奈瓦尔(Gérard de Nerval)翻译的版本编X写而成，并于1846年在巴黎首演。这部作品经常在音乐厅中演出，偶而也会视为歌剧上演。其中的三段，匈牙利进行曲(Marche Hongroisse)、妖精芭蕾(Ballet des sylphes)与幽灵的小步舞曲(Menuet des follets)有时会抽出来独自演出.


大纲
第一部分
浮士德身处匈牙利的山间(这部分是由柏辽兹加入的，原作中并无此段)，他听到了农夫们的歌唱与舞蹈，但是发现自己没有办法和他们一样如此快乐。远方传来进行曲的声音，匈牙利的士兵们在山林中行军。
第二部分
浮士德相当的沮丧，甚至想要自杀。但是当他拿起一杯毒药，准备一饮而尽时，他听到教堂的钟声与复活赞美诗的歌声响起。这让浮士德改变心意想要继续活下去。突然，恶魔麦菲斯特出现，他要带着浮士德去旅行，而浮士德也答应了。麦菲斯特带他去一家小酒馆，其中一个酒客布兰德(Brander)唱了老鼠之歌。接着他又在恶魔唱完跳蚤之歌后，即兴创作了一首讽刺性的圣诗赋格。浮士德觉得恶心，并询问麦菲斯特还要带他去看什么，有没有什么其他可看的？于是恶魔带着他来到乡间，并对他施法让他爱上一个叫做玛格利特(Marguerite)的女人(其实只是幻影)。浮士德在沉睡中不断作梦，醒来后不断呼喊着玛格利特的名字。恶魔要帮助浮士德得到她，于是他们两人就走到玛格利特住的小镇中，躲在学生与军人的群体中。
第三部分
浮士德与恶魔偷偷潜入玛格利特的家中。玛格利特走近，并唱着"世界尽头的王"这首歌。恶魔走出玛格利特的家中，并在她家的四周跳起幽灵的小步舞曲。浮士德这时候出现在玛格利特面前，而玛格利特向他承认，他就是她梦中的那个人。他们唱起爱的二重唱，但此时恶魔突然闯入并告诉浮士德他们现在非得离开不可，因为玛格利特的妈妈正带着乡人回家。浮士德与玛格利特道别后，与恶魔离开。
第四部份
玛格利特坐在家中唱着"纺纱歌"，并等着浮士德回来。虽然学生与军人又再度行进，但这次浮士德并不在其中。场景转到森林中，浮士德唱着"向自然祈祷"。这时恶魔告诉浮士德一个坏消息，玛格利特因为不小心给她母亲吃了太多安眠药而造成她母亲死亡，她被捕入狱且隔天即将被吊死。浮士德相当惊慌，而恶魔告诉浮士德说她可以解救玛格利特，但是浮士德必须出卖他的灵魂，于是浮士德签了这份出卖灵魂的同意书。他们两人骑上马奔驰准备去搭救玛格利特，但是浮士德看到周边的景象越来越奇怪，内心的不安也越来越强烈。他们突然停下来，浮士德听到钟声响起，这代表已经很接近玛格利特行刑的时间了，他们继续加速。但是周遭的景象却越来越恐怖，越来越奇怪，有从天空上漂下的血雨，路旁也随处可见骨骸。最终他们来到了地狱。地狱的恶魔王子问麦菲斯特，浮士德是否出卖了他的灵魂，他说是。这时恶魔的合唱唱起胜利之歌，赞颂恶魔王子与围绕着麦菲斯特跳舞。
尾声
合唱团唱个地狱的恐怖与神秘。接着化身为神的玛格利特降临，因为浮士德所签的这份文件，让玛格利特从死亡中获得救赎而上天堂。
